Control efforts against Japanese knotweed and Tree-of-Heaven have begun in the Juniata Watershed!
Starting in the fall of 2005, Natural Biodiversity, the Juniata Clean Water Partnership, Rails-to-Trails of Central Pennsylvania, Inc. and The Western Pennsylvania Watershed Program joined forces to attack these alien invaders. This initial weeding effort along portions of the Lower Trail was Natural Biodiversity’s first conservation project in the Juniata Watershed.
Upon completion of site assessments, it was determined that there was an 81.61% cover of Japanese knotweed and a 53% cover of Tree-of-Heaven.
At the Water Street section of the Lower Trail, 0.52 acres of Japanese knotweed were manually cut by citizen volunteers. Then a certified applicator followed up with a selective herbicide treatment. Upstream from the knotweed, 0.34 acres of Tree-of-Heaven also selectively were sprayed with herbicide by the applicator. Native plant revegetation currently is being planned.
